The President and CEO of the Computer and Communications Industry Association has released his opinion on upcoming government auctions for broadcast spectrum, planned by the Federal Communications Commission. According to Edward J. Black, the outcome of the auctions will determine the future of the wireless and Internet markets for consumers as concerns rise over how the FCC will ensure fair competition when bidding for the spectrum begins. The spectrum, gathered from various TV stations throughout the US, will be auctioned off to mobile telecommunications companies for the use of Internet access through wireless mobile devices; debate continues as to the effects of such an auction as many are concerned that a non-competitive bidding process will lead to higher wireless prices for consumers. Additionally, the upcoming auction is “critical,” says Black, as the spectrum covers much rural area currently without much Internet access. According to the author, the auction will be “the biggest opportunity to meet the growing demand for spectrum” for the oncoming years.
