Amazon Now Delivers Restaurant Delivery In Chicago

Amazon Prime customers in the Windy City can now take advantage of one of Amazon’s more recent delivery ventures: local restaurant delivery.

The eCommerce giant announced yesterday (Jan. 21) that Amazon now offers delivery from a number of restaurants, including Balena, Big Bowl, Big Star, Chicago q, M Burger, RPM Italian and Wildfire. Prime Now had previously delivered from Plum Market, My Fit Foods and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

The Prime Now mobile app enables those customers to view participating restaurants, browse menus, place orders, track the status of their delivery and watch as the driver travels from the restaurant to the delivery address in real-time. Amazon claims those deliveries come within an hour or less, with the average time clocking in at 39 minutes.

“Chicago is home to just about every kind of cuisine you could want,” said Gus Lopez, general manager for Amazon Restaurants.

As of yesterday (Jan. 21), restaurant delivery is available across 18 zip codes in Chicago. Prime members can download the Prime Now app or visit amazon.com/primenow to enter their zip code and see if Prime Now is available in their area. In zip codes where restaurant delivery is available, customers will see Restaurants on the home page.

Amazon’s announcement comes during the same week Uber announced it would be expanding its meal delivery in 10 more cities. The chosen 10 are also likely to be the 10 biggest, and going forward, Uber enthusiasts will be able to choose meals from dozens of local restaurants via an UberEATS app.

The program is an outgrowth of the firm’s lunchtime-only service. The newest version will leverage its large network of drivers to deliver goods and people. Uber is entering a vertical of food delivery services that is already crowded and difficult, as a few of the VC-backed meal delivery services have already begun to struggle with bringing their concepts to scale.
