Report Finds Many Smart Speaker Owners Buy Additional Devices

Amazon Alexa skils

A new report from Edison Research found that 42 percent of smart speaker owners have two or more devices — and that number is expected to grow.

According to news from TechCrunch, the new numbers mean there’s around 1.5 to 1.6 smart speaker devices per household. In addition, a recent survey estimates that Amazon has sold more than 10 million Alexa-powered Amazon Echo voicdevices since late 2014 and is forecasted to control 70 percent of the voice-controlled speaker market this year.

And these new numbers mean there’s promise for Amazon’s newer Alexa-powered devices, like the fashion camera Echo Look and the first Amazon Echo device with a screen, the Echo Show, which is launching this week.

Edison Research also looked into the habits of smart speaker device owners, confirming that the speakers are being heavily used: 70 percent say they now listen to more audio at home; 65 percent said they wouldn’t want to go back to not having a speaker in the home and 42 percent claim the voicebot device is “essential” to their everyday lives.

In addition, the devices are being enjoyed by the entire family, with 90 percent of parents with a smart speaker saying their kids are enjoying them and eight in 10 saying it has made it easier to entertain the kids.
