ATM Growth Set To Surge

The number of ATMs located around the globe is expected to jump significantly during the next four years.

The results of a study by RBR, a London-based consulting and strategic research firm, show that the number of ATMs worldwide jumped by 180,000 units, or 8 percent, during 2012. This brought the total number to roughly 2.6 million machines deployed globally, ATM Marketplace reported on Jan. 16.

ATM growth was strongest in the Asia-Pacific region in 2012, with a reported growth rate of 13 percent. Expansion was slowest in Latin America, with only 5 percent growth.

The RBR report also showed that independent ATM deployments are a major contributor to worldwide growth, particularly among nonbank companies. Other innovations such as mobile ATM services also had an impact.
