eBay CEO John Donahoe said Tuesday that his company is “not against an Internet sales tax,” according to an All Things D report. Donahoe made the comments at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference.
The online commerce giant has been an outspoken opponent of the Marketplace Fairness Act, which is widely believed to pass through the Senate early next week. Donahoe said that eBay is not opposed to any Internet sales tax, but is opposed to the one currently proposed as it places the tax threshold for businesses at $1 million in annual out-of-state sales.
“We believe the tax burden that’s going to be put on the smallest businesses is going to disadvantage them,” Donahoe said. “And so we’re just asking for a small business exemption so that what happens online mirrors what happens offline..”
