IDC: ERP Leads Cloud Computing Spending

IDC’s recent Worldwide Semi-annual Public Cloud Services Tracker showed that enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management services make up the majority of global cloud spending. Specifically, the worldwide market for cloud services hit $U.S. 45.7 billion during 2013.

Additionally, of that total, $U.S. 10.78 billion (24 percent) was spent on ERP systems and $U.S. 8.13 billion (18 percent) was spent on CRM. IDC also found that the strength of ERP and CRM spending meant the software-as-a-Service model accounted for 72 percent of the market. However, the Platform-as-a-Service and Infrastructure-as-a-Service models made up 14 percent of the market each.

Other major cloud-based service categories included servers at $U.S. 3.981 billion or 9 percent of the market, according to IDC.

E-commerce is becoming a more important aspect of business in the B2B world. Last month, PYMNTS.com discussed how Forrester found that, 90 percent of businesses that sell online to customers saw an increase in revenue and profitability per customer order.

Furthermore, 89 percent of surveyed B2B organizations that had implemented e-commerce within the last seven years saw an increase in annual revenue, while 81 percent had an increase in average order value.
