Spain: CNMC accuses Vigo harbour companies of uncompetitive practices

Spanish competition regulator CNMC has announced an investigation against a number of companies and labor unions operating in the harbour of the city of Vigo, one of Spain’s principal shipping ports, over suspected uncompetitive practices. The companies are thought to have signed an agreement to coordinate and manage labor relations, in force since 1996.

    The companies involved include the General Workers Union (UGT), the Comisiones Obreras union (CCOO), Confederación Intersindical Galega (CIG), Líneas Marítimas Españolas, S.A., Bergé Marítima, S.L., Estibadora Gallega, S.A., Terminales Marítimas de Vigo, S.L.U. and Pérez Torres Marítima, S.L. The illicit conduct was discovered using information provided by the Vigo Port Authority.

    The CNMC’s initial search detected reasonable evidence of unlawful practices, as described by the country’s competition laws, with charges being presented over the alleged violation of Article 1 of the LDC, as well as article 101 of the European Union treaty.
