Canada: Bureau wants telco watchdog to protect small wireless operators

The Competition Bureau has reportedly sent a recommendation to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission urging the regulator to ensure that small wireless operators have access to wholesale services.

    Canada’s competition authority said Thursday that it submitted recommendations to the CRTC that it “adopt measures to address the incentives Canada’s largest mobile wireless companies may have to raise their competitors’ wholesale prices as these increases may be passed on to consumers.”

    The Bureau is reportedly concerned that the top wireless firms could be harming competition and increasing consumer costs by charging too high of costs for its wholesale roaming services to smaller rivals.

    The CRTC is currently investigating the wholesale roaming services industry.
