France: Energy tax breaks capture Commission’s attention

The European Commission opened an investigation Thursday into tax breaks offered to the largest French companies, say reports, over concerns the reductions give those firms an unfair advantage over competitors.

    In a statement, the Commission said it “has doubt about [the tax breaks’] compatibility with state aid rules.”

    France requires energy consumers to pay a surcharge to fund wind energy initiatives, but the largest firms pay a reduced rate of that surcharge. The fees are capped at 0.5 percent of annual value for those companies, reports say.
