Ireland: Energy market failures to face EU Court of Justice

Ireland is reportedly being taken to the EU Court of Justice over its failed efforts to boost competition in its electricity market, say reports.

    Ireland is facing more than $27,000 a day in fines, according to the EU office in Dublin. Ireland was ordered to increase the market’s competition by the EU electricity Directive, introduced in 2011. The Directive was established because “the commission wants a separation of the energy production and supply activates from the networks” to open the market to new entrants, according to Peter Power, who spoke to reporters from Dublin’s EU office.
