Russia: Gazprom, EU fail to find common ground

As EU officials look to loosen Russia’s gas giant Gazprom’s grip on the EU oil industry, repots say the EU Energy Commissioner and the company have so far failed to find common ground on the matter, having held discussions late last week without progress.

    The meetings were held following the European Commission’s announcement last month that Gazprom’s agreements made with six EU members were against competition rules. The nations agreed to host a part of the Gazprom pipeline project set to launch sometime this year, say reports.

    Since, Gazprom has spoken out against the Commission, also challenging EU rules against one company owning both a pipeline and its distribution networks.

    Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak and EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger met last Friday and reported that no progress had been made on the conflicts.
