EU: Dutch, German shrimp traders fined for cartel

Four shrimp traders operating in the North Sea were fined more than $38 million after the European Commission found the companies to be operating an illegal cartel.

    The companies named by the Commission include Netherlands-based Heiploeg, Klass Puul and Kok Seafood, as well as Germany-based Stuhrk.

    Following an investigation, the regulator found the firms to have colluded to fix prices and divide sale volumes for the North Sea shrimping market in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands between 2003 and 2007. Such price-fixing directly affected customer costs, said the regulator.
