US: Sprint bows out of upcoming spectrum auction

While only a few months ago Sprint, the US’s third-largest wireless operator, urged the Federal Communications Commission to launch a planned spectrum auction more quickly, the company announced this week that it has decided against participating in the bidding for the so-called H Block spectrum; the decision, reports say, will come as welcome news to Dish Network.

    T-Mobile also said this week it was not interested in the high-speed spectrum.

    Dish has previously offered a $1.56 billion base price for the spectrum in hopes of authorities allowing the company broader use of the airwaves it owns.

    Dish and the FCC declined to comment, but Sprint said it is looking to secure lower-frequency spectrum and will also focus on developing its planned LTE network, called Spark.
