Austria: Cartel court fines food retailer guilty of price-fixing

Food retail giant Rewe has been fined about $27 million by Austria’s cartel court in what amounts to the second-largest antitrust fine in the nation’s history. According to reports, the country’s Federal Competition Authority found the retailer to have formed a cartel to fix sale prices with suppliers between 2007 and 2012. While Rewe said in a statement that it does not legally agree with the decision, the company accepted the accusations from the start and found the fine to be “acceptable.” According to reports, the regulator suspected the price-fixing to have affected most the sectors of dairy and beer.
