US: Macmillan ups settlement by $6M in eBooks case

As eBooks publishers and Apple Inc. wrap-up a two-year-long legal confrontation with the US Department of Justice, the latest development in the case has publisher Macmillan settling for $6 million more than initially expected. The publisher, one of five that were accused of raising eBook prices, had earlier agreed to pay $20 million but will now reportedly ay $26 million. Macmillan denies the accusations, and court documents suggest the company will not be a part of an upcoming trial – scheduled to begin on June 3 – involving Apple Inc. and Penguin. Macmillan’s settlement includes $20 million in consumer compensation; additional fees are lawyers’ and litigation fees.
