EU: Regulators ensure ‘level-playing field’ for new data protection rules

According to a press release offered by the European Commission, the antitrust authority will hold a meeting today with the European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association to discuss how to ensure a “level-playing field” within Europe’s telecoms market to ensure sufficient competition. Vice-president Viviane Reding is to meet with Luigi Gambardella, the chairman of ETNO to collectively discuss the EU Data Protection regulations recently proposed by the Commission to ensure competition remains in the telecom sector in order to guarantee personal data is protected at an equal level of protection regardless of location or economic sector of the service provider. In a statement, VP Reding said in a statement that the new data protection proposals will be the same either for both EU and non-EU companies, ensuring that all telecom providers can effectively compete.
