Australia: Authorities should back off of supermarket sector, says consumer report
A report released by the Institute for Public Affairs warns that consumers will have to pay higher grocery prices unless the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission allows Coles and Woolworths to continue its price war. The consumer group says that an increased presence by the ACCC in the supermarket sector will ultimately force up prices, noting that when Coles decision to cut the price of milk – soon followed by Woolworths – the government probed the incident, ultimately deciding against the price-cut. The reports calls the incident an example of the “political football” played by authorities in the food market.
