TikTok Fined in Indonesia Over Tokopedia Deal Reporting

Indonesia’s competition watchdog has imposed a penalty on TikTok for failing to promptly report its acquisition of local e-commerce platform Tokopedia. The fine, amounting to 15 billion rupiah (about $900,000), was announced on Monday, according to Reuters.

    TikTok, owned by Chinese technology company ByteDance, completed its purchase of a majority stake in Tokopedia earlier this year. In January 2024, the social media firm secured a 75.01% share in the e-commerce platform for $840 million, buying the stake from PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia, per Reuters.

    Indonesia’s anti-monopoly agency holds the authority to investigate potential breaches of competition law, including failures in timely reporting of major business deals. It can levy fines or impose administrative measures when violations are found, Reuters reported.

    The sanction highlights the growing scrutiny over TikTok’s business operations in Southeast Asia, where regulators are paying close attention to the company’s expanding role in e-commerce.
