Australian competition officials are reportedly pushing for a breakup of the National Broadband Network before it is privatized.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has come out in support of splitting the NBN into three separate units, agreeing with the former Labor government and creator of NBN Co.
At an NBN conference held Monday, ACCC chairman Rod Sims argued that a breakup of the company “should be done prior to any privatization of NBN Co.”
”After that time, it is highly unlikely that any separation will ever occur,” he said.
Sims added that separating the company into three separate operations will ensure future competition in the broadband infrastructure industry.
According to reports, NBN will remain under government ownership until it is fully operational. The company said it does not expect to be so until 2020.
