Canada: Public inquiry into telecom sales practices underway

The Canadian government has ordered telecommunications regulator CRTC to investigate and report on sales practices by the country’s leading operators. Ottowa’s move to demand a public inquiry follows a number of reports by the Competition Bureau of Canada, highlighting “misleading and aggressive” conduct on the part of internet, TV and mobile providers and comes after the regulator rejected earlier calls to probe the issue.

    “Canadians already have a variety of options available to them to seek redress depending on the nature of the issue,” said the CRTC in February.

    The CRTC now has until February 28, 2019, to report back on the concerns the country’s Competition Bureau to assist the watchdog in its inquiry. “This is an issue that Canadians have raised, we’ve heard them loud and clear and we’re taking action,” said Canada’s innovation, science and economic development minister minister Navdeep Bains, according to The Globe and Mail, adding that “what I want to see is a clear set of recommendations and a path forward.”
