The Investigating Authority of Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE) announced the launch of a probe on the market for household insecticides, pursuing allegations of vertical restrictive practices in the sale and distribution of this product.
The competition authority’s investigation will look into various presentations of household insect control products, highly sought after for combatting and controlling disease-carrying insects.
Presentations included in COFECE’s market probe will include insecticides sold as as powders, aerosols, gases, liquids, among others.
Insect-borne diseases are considered an important public health problem in Mexico, which includes extensive sub-tropical areas where illnesses such as dengue, zika, and others are endemic.
Under Mexico’s competiton law, no pre-judgement is made regarding the eventual discovery of actual misconduct, and suspected violators cannot be named at this stage. Should vertical restraints be confirmed, each perpetrator may be face fines of up to 8% of their income, as well as orders to cease the offending conduct.
