EU: Antitrust Chief to move against Gazprom

 |  February 18, 2015

European Union authorities will move forward with a long-running anti-monopoly case against Russia’s Gazprom, EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager told The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

Gazprom has been under formal investigation for more than two years amid concerns that it abuses its market dominance in eastern Europe to block rivals, but settlement talks have been held up because of the violence in Ukraine.

According to the Journal if the EU does issue formal charges against Gazprom, it likely would be interpreted as an act of aggression by the Kremlin, which already is under pressure from falling oil prices and international sanctions.
