Final extension of funding approved for Alpine rolling motorway service

 |  July 11, 2012

The European Commission has approved the final extension of France and Italy’s funding of the experimental phase of a rolling motorway service. The funding is for the Dijon-Mondane-Turin route on a rail freight service in the Alps. The service allows trucks to be transported on special trains using the Mont Cenis rail tunnel, as an alternative to using roads. The scheme was approved by the European Commission in 2003, as development aid for combined transport.

The approved support is conditioned on the service being awarded by June 30, 2013. The funding is need to phase in the service, a transition that has been “hampered and slowed down by technical and administrative problems.”
