In addition to the U.S. lawsuit, Nokia confirmed it also lodged a related complaint in Brazil against Paramount earlier this week, per Reuters. The company has taken similar actions against other major technology players in recent months, suing Acer, Asus, and Hisense on patent infringement grounds, while previously settling disputes with Amazon and HP on undisclosed terms.

Nokia argued that its intellectual property enables the compression of raw video files to make streaming possible. In its filing, the company alleged that Paramount’s technology violates 13 of its patents. Court documents also noted that licensing discussions between the two companies began in 2022 but failed to produce an agreement.

“Our preference is to avoid litigation, but Paramount left us with no choice,” Nokia said in a statement on Friday. Representatives for Paramount did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to Reuters.

The case, filed under Nokia Technologies Oy v. Paramount Skydance Corp, is being heard in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, case number 1:25-cv-01054. Nokia is represented by attorneys Warren Lipschitz, Erik Fountain, Mitch Verboncoeur, and Joshua Budwin of McKool Smith. Attorney information for Paramount was not immediately available.
