After obtaining a comprehensive legal opinion from a retired Supreme Court judge, Indian hybrid seed producers are once again preparing to take on the global hybrid seed giant MonsantoBSE -1.67 % on royalty payments for BT cotton technology.
Following the move of certain governments in leading cottongrowing states to fix caps on royalty amounts that seed makers pay to obtain hybrid seed technology and also on seed selling prices, local seed producers had earlier urged Monsanto to cut down royalties.
With the American hybrid seed giant Mahyco Monsanto Biotech (MMB) refusing to bring down the royalty payments and return the excess royalties they paid from 2010, domestic seed producers moved the union agriculture ministry seeking its intervention.
