US: Lawyer campaigns for Senate on vintage antitrust platform

A lawyer from Nebraska is reportedly seeking a seat in the Senate, and his running platform includes an old fashioned antitrust movement.

Dave Domina secured the Democratic nomination last month, a victory won on a campaign that fights against major mergers he says squeeze suppliers and harms the ability of small companies to compete.

Domina is calling for the US Department of Justice to sue Tyson for its proposed $8.55 billion buyout of Hillshire Brands. In 2004, the lawyer won a major jury verdict in an antitrust fight against Tyson regarding cattle purchasing contracts, reports say, though a judge later tossed that verdict.

Domina is also calling for the government to cap banks’ market share at 5 percent of all US deposits; that cap currently stands at 10 percent.

According to reports, the lawyer’s campaign of fighting major conglomerates runs against how antitrust policy has developed since the 1960s.

Though Domina’s campaign is considered old school, reports say he has a shot at being a rare Democrat elected by Nebraska to Congress. He will run against Republican Ben Sasse on November 4.
