US: Oracle mulls $5B takeover as sales grow weak

Software conglomerate Oracle is reportedly in exclusive talks to acquire hotel and restaurant software developer Micros Systems, unnamed sources said, and the deal could be reached for up to $5 billion.

Oracle has been plagued by 10 quarters of weak sales, according to reports, and is now scrambling to strengthen its brand after failing to establish itself early in the cloud software industry.

The deal, which has not been made public, has not been finalized and could still fall apart, the sources said.

Reports say Oracle has spent about $50 billion in 100 acquisitions in the last 10 years. This would be the second time a buyout of Micros Systems would be attempted, one source said, after an earlier deal fell through at the last minute six years ago.
