Vietnam: Synchronized mobile fee hikes sound alarm bells

Following the simultaneous hike in mobile 3G service fees last weekend, reports say experts are concerned that mobile carriers colluded in anticipation of the price increases.

Vinaphone, MobiFone and Viettel announced plans last weekend to up service fees by 40 percent; the three companies together control more than 97 percent of the market.

According to a Pham and Associates Law Office lawyer, the operators’ announcement is “abnormal” and says competition regulators should probe the matter. The three operators, however, deny allegations of collusion.
