Square Unveils Sleeker, More Efficient Reader

Square has unveiled an upgraded version of Square Reader, and according to Gigaom writer Kevin Fitchard’s December 9 breakdown, the card reader appears to be a faster and sleeker version than its previous iteration.

Fitchard spoke with Square head of hardware Jesse Dorogusker, who said that one of the major focuses of the redesign was to replace the device’s magnetic read. Combined with a card-gripping spring, the new Reader is now 45 percent thinner than the last Reader version. The company says.

The card-reading component received an additional overhaul on its custom chip.

Square’s major focus was delivering speed to sellers while still providing an affordable platform. In a press release, the company stated that the new Reader includes a screen timing feature that allows merchants to schedule payments in a way that makes sense.

“For many businesses, speed and efficiency at the counter is critical. Square Register’s new navigation is intuitive and ergonomic for a faster workflow that keeps the line moving. Design details improve the interaction between buyer and seller; for example, the timing of how Register screens change is designed to correspond with how customers naturally order during a lunch rush,” the company said.
