Grocery Deliverer Shipt Adds Alcohol

Shipt Will Deliver Alcohol Now

Ancient wise man Homer Simpson once said, “To alcohol — the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.” The logic might not be airtight, but at least one delivery service is hoping that some of the hard stuff can give its business a much-needed pick-me-up.

Internet Retailer is reporting that grocery delivery service Shipt is adding alcohol to its list of shoppable products. Come July 27, customers in the Orlando area will be eligible to get their drink on courtesy of Shipt and partnering retailer ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, which operates 150 locations across Florida.

It’s a partnership that’s been a long time in the making for Shipt, said Community Manager Anne Adams.

“As we expanded in Florida, people loved the grocery delivery service, but we continued to receive feedback about people wanting alcohol delivery,” Adams told Internet Retailer.

Since Shipt employs contractors to fulfill deliveries, Adams explained that the company is enforcing a one-day alcohol delivery training course. The company’s app is also being updated with scanning technology to verify the correct age of the buyer in question.

Whether Shipt can get all its ducks in a row is just one half of the unbalanced formula in between itself and success. Competitors like Drizly are already up and running with alcohol delivery in 24 cities, and Amazon is testing out a one-hour program in Seattle, San Diego, Chicago and NYC. While Adams said that Shipt is planning on expanding its alcohol offerings beyond Orlando, there might not be much room left for it when it finally does.
