US: Authorities gain time to review $2.6bn airline merger

Alaska Air Group Inc. and Virgin America Inc. have agreed to give US Department of Justice officials an undisclosed amount of time to review their $2.6 billion deal after the government raised concerns that the combination may undermine competition in some markets.

    Alaska Air and Virgin America aren’t discussing a settlement with the Justice Department that could resolve the government’s concerns and clear the way for the merger, a person familiar with the matter said. However, the extension of the review gives the airlines an opportunity to propose asset sales that may mollify the antitrust division.
