Court documents have confirmed earlier reports that a class action lawsuit will seek damages from sports fighting association the UFC on antitrust claims similar to those against the NCAA.
A group of current and formal mixed martial arts fighters are suing the Ultimate Fighting Championship parent company Zuffa, according to reports; three plaintiffs are leading the class.
Reports say the claims accuse the UFC of being a monopoly that abuses its dominance to force out rival promotions and cap fighter compensation. The UFC is accused of barring its fighters from working with other promoters or profiting from deals they make independently.
The case has not yet been certified as a class action, and the UFC says it has not been served with the lawsuit or seen legal documents related to the case. Rumors had been circulating for several months about a class action against the UFC, and experts say the case mirrors claims brought against the NCAA for similar allegations of abusing a dominant market position to limit athlete compensation.
