Australia: Productivity Commission wants ‘natural monopoly’ for infrastructure services

Australia’s Productivity Commission has called for legislation of a ‘natural monopoly’ as a way to assess possible regulated access to various infrastructure services. According to the government regulators, a regulated monopoly could promote healthy competition within various markets that may outweigh potential negative effects of regulation. The proposals, revealed in the Commission’s draft report of infrastructure services, are now open for public comment until July 5.
