Israel: Unsealed Trajtenberg committee minutes reveal gov’t competition failings
Various meetings’ minutes from the Trajtenberg committee have been leaked to the press, leading to some major revelations of the state of Israel’s economic competition. Among those revelations is the government’s failure to adequately regulation competition, a key factor in the nation’s high cost of living according to chief economist at the Antitrust Authority Shlomi Frizet. Also according to Frizet, regulators had a significant lack of training as well as a lack of staff to properly enforce government competition regulation. Committee members reportedly pointed out that authorities consistently face major corporations who are well-connected and have the highest of legal and political resources at their disposal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formed the committee in response to the summer 2011 social protest movement; since its August 2011 appointment, the government has attempted to keep the committee’s meeting minutes sealed.
