Philippines: New antitrust authority requests courts

The Philippines’ Department of Justice has made a formal recommendation to the Supreme Court that the nation establish antitrust courts and begin a governmental fight against cartels and competition issues. In its letter to the Supreme Court Chief Justice, the Department of Justice described the implementation of antitrust regulation as an “urgent task,” and one that is in-line with the President’s agenda of regulating competition in the economy. The Philippines established their first competition authority through the DOJ’s Office for Competition, opened in 2011.
