U.S.: Long battle looking up for Justice Department Antitrust chief nominee Baer

The nominee for chief of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division may be closer to taking his seat, according to sources. William Baer, whose nomination was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee last September by a 12 to 5 vote, is facing an uphill battle to take the position. Several senators have said they will vote against Baer, citing classified information from an FBI background report on the nominee that hasn’t yet been released. Sources say the information pertains to his personal life, rather than professional. Senator Charles Grassley (Iowa-R) is Baer’s top opponent. Democrats need a unanimous vote to bring the subject to the floor of the Senate; sources say Baer will likely be approved if Republicans allow the vote to reach the floor.
