Interim authorization for bank plan to eliminate ATM fees in Indigenous communities

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has granted interim authorization to the Australian Bankers Assocation’s proposal for ATMs in some remote Indigenous communities. The Association, comprised of member banks and ATM suppliers, aim to provide free withdrawals and balance transactions at 76 ATMs starting in December 2012.  ACCC Chairman Rod Sims noted the “long standing issue” of high ATM fees in remote Indigenous communities.
