Australia: ACCC sues supermarket rivals for gas discounts

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has reportedly launched legal action against rival supermarket chains Woolworths and Coles for breaking promises over earlier concessions made with the regulator.

    Reports say the ACCC accepted an offer by the companies last December to limit fuel discounts offered with supermarket purchases. But the ACCC says the companies broke their promise, and is now bringing the supermarket chains to the Federal Court.

    According to the competition regulator, the competing supermarkets are both offering gas discounts for which only supermarket buyers are qualified. Those discounts were limited after the ACCC launched an investigation into the companies for allegations those deals squeezed groceries and fuel chains out of the market.
