Australia: ACCC to explore relationship between Tolls, workers union

 |  October 20, 2014

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is reportedly set to explore relationships between supply chain conglomerate Toll and the Transport Workers Union, an undertaking experts say is significant because agreements between corporations and trade unions are normally exempt from antitrust crackdowns.

Reports say ACCC chairman Rod Sims has launched an investigation into Toll and the union. The TWU gets money by Toll but a portion of that money is dependent upon the TWU taking action against Toll rivals.

Reports say Toll and the union would agree on a rival target, and the union would launch “compliance” investigations.

The ACCC will examine whether these agreements violated competition law. If authorities find the agreements are anticompetitive, the matter will head to Federal Court, say reports.
