Australia: New National Broadband Network bows down to ACCC

 |  November 20, 2013

After more than two years of discussions, reports say the builders of the new National Broadband Network has agreed to accept demands from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission regarding wholesale prices on the broadband provider for nearly three decades.

The ACCC had planned to reject NBN’s pricing proposals for wholesale Internet services last July, declaring that the pricing plans must allow for ACCC intervention in commercial disputes.

NBN is set to sell the broadband services to providers including Telstra and Optus.

Reports say NBN plans to re-submit its pricing proposals since accepting the ACCC’s demands. According to the regulator’s chairman Rod Sims, the new proposals will allow “a significant degree of regulatory certainty” for providers before entering into long-term contracts with NBN.
