Qantas will resume direct flights to San Francisco by the end of the year, in return for allowing US partner American Airlines to operate a daily service between Sydney and Los Angeles.
Under the expanded partnership American Airlines will take over four Qantas services. The two carriers will operate a total 17 services a week between Sydney and LA, up from 14.
As part of the changes, the four-year-old Qantas and American Airlines joint venture will also shift to a revenue share agreement.
Although the arrangement is subject to regulatory approval, airline bosses Alan Joyce and Doug Parker were today confident of getting the go ahead.
“American Airlines is one of our most important alliance partners, and this deal strengthens the longstanding ties between us to provide a platform for future growth across the Pacific,” said Mr Joyce at the International Air Transport Association conference in Miami.
