Australia: Shoppers save big from grocery rivals’ discounts

According to reports, the competition between Coles and Woolworths’ petroleum pricing saves consumers more than $4 million a week. Coles apparently discounts its products for consumers depending on how many liters of gas they buy; the discount, initiated in October, was soon followed by Woolworths in January. The decision to offer the discount by Coles is now under investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, though Coles has announced it plans to maintain the discount until April. The discount from the two rivals has been calculated to save nearly $1.9 million for Coles shoppers and $2.4 millino for Woolworths shoppers.
