The Bundeskartellamt has launched an investigation of the “big five” gas station chains: Aral (a BP unit), Esso, Shell, Jet (a ConocoPhillips unit), and Total. The probe seeks to determine if the five colluded to price independent gas stations out of the market by selling gas for less than wholesale price. The regulator is also concerned that the chains charge their rivals more for wholesale gas than what they charge at their own stations.
