Botswana: Despite confession, regs toss bid-rigging case

Despite the fact that local company Ya Raheem confessed to rigging a government tender with an employee of a competing firm, Botswana’s Competition Commission dismissed the case, a citing lack of evidence.

The case was introduced to the Commission by the Competition Authority, but the Commission decided the regulator failed to adequately make its case despite the guilty confession.

Under national law, the Authority investigates and prosecutes cases, while the Commission adjudicates.

Reports say the Authority will likely appeal the Commission’s decision.
