Canada: Bell, Astral merger meets renewed resistance

Cable company Cogeco Cable Inc. publically denounced a planned merger between Astral Media Inc. with BCE, Canada’s largest provider of broadcasting and telecommunications services. According to reports, Cogeco is basing its opposition on BCE’s 2012 attempts to take over Astral, which was ultimately rejected by antitrust authorities. According to Cogeco, competition issues have still not been resoled in this takeover attempt, as BCE would have “unprecedented” market power that could not be constrained by regulators. Cogeco has filed a list of specific disagreements to the deal to the CRTC.
