Canada: Bureau surprises with new consumer-friendly stance

Reports say Canada’s Competition Bureau has surprisingly joined the Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission and the federal government in promoting consumer-friendly policy.

    The Consumers Association of Canada spoke out to praise the Bureau, saying that “for the first time in a long time” it sees the competition regulator has promoting consumer values.

    Reports say the Bureau’s recent settlement with eBooks publishers over allegations of price-fixing is just one example of new, consumer-friendly pursuits. That settlement requires publishers to end “most-favored nation” agreements that can lead to anticompetitive pricing.

    According to reports, consumers are more used to the Bureau as a mere gatekeeper to merger deals.
