Canada: New supreme court nomination picks competition litigator

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s administration has named litigator Suzanne Cote to the Supreme Court of Canada, say reports, in the first-ever instance of a female lawyer being picked for the Supreme Court direct from private practice.

    According to reports, Cote is the head of litigation firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt. In her 34-year career, Cote has litigated matters involving the Competition Act as well as shareholder disputes, commercial contracts and other areas.

    Reports say it is unclear whether the lawyer will need to face a parliamentary review committee.
