US officials are poised to extradite a Canadian individual on antitrust charges for the first time ever.
According to reports, Jon Bennett, head of Bennett Environmental, was denied his appeal of the extradition on October 30. The US Department of Justice is accusing Bennett of bid-rigging.
The DOJ claims Bennett conspired to manipulate the bidding process on the Federal Creosote Superfund Site project in 2001, and that the collusion lead to inflated subcontract prices. The project was worth about $200 million, reports say.
Bennett Environmental pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in 2008. Two former executives also pleaded guilty, while a third was sentenced to 14 years in prison last March for antitrust violations.
Bennett was indicted in 2009.
