As three of the world’s largest shipping companies announced plans for the so-called P3 alliance, reports say Chinese officials are scrutinizing the joint venture plans, likely planning to make a decision regarding the alliance this May.
The alliance includes Maersk, MSC and CMA GCM, three of the largest shipping container companies. Other jurisdictions have already cleared the deal.
But officials in China will take a close look at the alliance following concerns that P3 would overrun rivalry shipping lines in China and harm competition.
When the alliance first surfaced, rumors spread in China that a domestic carrier, such as China Shipping, may be thrown into the venture to quell competition concerns; repots say those rumors have largely died down, however.
