Estonia: EU tells telco watchdog to re-think wireless fee plans for market leader

 |  October 14, 2013

The European Commission as requested that the Estonian telecommunications watchdog, the ECA, abandon its proposal that submits a method of calculating how much Estonia’s top telco operator can charge competitors for using its infrastructure.

According to a press release offered by the European Commission, the EU regulator’s request to Estonia follows a three-month probe into the matter. The watchdog says EU telco regulators BEREC have supported the Commission’s findings that lead to the request.

According to the press release, Estonian regulators failed to provide sufficient evidence that proves such a method complies with EU law to promote competition. Estonia reportedly based the calculation off initial historical costs of assets, rather than current costs.
